New affordable housing project breaks ground in northeast Calgary

An affordable housing project is being built in northeast Calgary.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Whitehorn on Friday morning.

Ground has been broken on a new affordable housing development in Northeast Calgry.

The Homespace Society Project will see the construction of temporary townhouses for 52 vulnerable families.

The seven buildings will include two-bedroom and three-bedroom units.

The units will be available to families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. They will be rented at 30 percent below market prices.

The development is part of the city’s housing strategy, which council approved in 2023 after a two-day public hearing where more than 100 Calgarians shared their housing struggles.
