2024 Malaysian MotoGP: Bagnaia fastest on Friday as Martin crashes | MotoGP

Francesco Bagnaia narrowly led second practice for the 2024 MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix ahead of Jorge Martin, who crashed late.

Ahead of this weekend’s races, only 17 points fell to the top two in the championship, and the uncertainty in the Valencia GP increased the importance of the Sepang round.

At the end of an hour-long training session, there was only 0.050 seconds difference between Bagnaia and Martin.

Bagnaia looked out or lined up for the first part of the session before moving to the front, while Martin looked comfortable until crashing out of Turn 1 as he started the final attack lap.

The Pramac driver’s report was minor and he walked away uninjured.

Last year’s Malaysian GP winner Enea Bastianini completed the top three ahead of Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales and Gresini’s Alex Marquez, while his teammate Marc Marquez entered the second quarter from 10th place.

While Martin started the session fastest with a time of 1:58.978, Bagnaia finished 18th at the end of his first run.

Martin improved his top lap time to 1:58.939 with 15 minutes left in the session and this would remain the benchmark until the closing 12 minutes.

Bagnaia was the rider who managed to dethrone Martin, and the reigning world champion achieved a time of 1:58.280 on the factory team Ducati GP24.

A few minutes later Martin led the field with a time of 1:57.829, and on his next lap he took a half-second lead with a time of 1:57.729.

However, Bagnaia produced a spectacular final lap at the end of the session, clocking a time of 1:57.679 to move ahead of Martin, who had no chance to react when he crashed at Turn 1 in the closing minutes.

Behind the top five, Fabio Quartararo made a late jump to sixth place ahead of Pramac’s Franco Morbidelli on his Yamaha with the old engine, while Alex Rins was eighth on his new M1 engine.

While KTM’s Jack Miller and Marc Marquez (Gresini) completed the top 10, Morbidelli’s final lap cost Pedro Acosta dearly and the Tech3 GASGAS rookie dropped to 11th place.
