New York’s top high school football team cancels season amid sexual harassment allegations

WARRENSBURG, N.Y. — The top-ranked team in New York’s small-school football poll abruptly canceled its undefeated season Saturday after officials from three upstate districts said allegations of sexual assault had been made against some of the team’s players on a school bus.

The Warrensburg-Lake George-Bolton team (8-0) was seeded first in the Division II, Class D football tournament and ranked No. 1 by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Superintendents for three school districts (which are combining to form a football team) said Warren County sheriff’s deputies opened an investigation Thursday, a day after the allegations were reported. The schools did not disclose any details.

In a joint statement, investigators — Amy Langworthy of Warrensburg, John Luthringer of Lake George and Chad Shippee of Bolton — called the behavior “egregious” and added that it was “a clear violation of the district and athletic code of conduct.”

“We have determined that it is necessary to cancel the remainder of the 2024 football season, effective immediately, to allow law enforcement to continue the criminal investigation,” investigators said. “This is not a decision we take lightly, and we recognize that the timing of this decision is disappointing. However, given the seriousness of the alleged circumstances and the ongoing investigation, this course of action was necessary.”

The schools declined to comment further, citing the ongoing law enforcement investigation. Contacted by The Post-Star newspaper in nearby Glens Falls, members of the team’s coaching staff said they were instructed not to comment.

This season, the team has outscored its opponents 329-34, except for one win in a loss. Another play was called after a quarter; The team was up 40-0 at this point and the opponent decided not to play the remainder of the game.

The schools are all located about an hour north of Albany. Class D is the smallest of the five registration classes that New York uses in its football championship format. Even when combined, the Warrensburg, Lake George and Bolton school districts still compete at the small school level.
