Two-year-old boy dies from accidental gunshot wound in Clewiston

CLEWISTON, Fla. — The Clewiston Police Department says a 2-year-old child died from a gunshot wound.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the department said they responded to a home on South Lopez Street around 7:30 p.m.

The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office and Medical Examiner’s Office were also at the scene.

A search warrant was obtained and police said the scene was being investigated.

During the preliminary examination, it was determined that the gun belonged to a person living in the house and there was no one else present at the scene.

Police say this is an isolated, accidental incident and there is no danger to the public.

We reached out to Chief Lewis for clarification on how the child received his gunshot wound.

The chief confirmed that the boy did not shoot himself; However, it is unclear who shot the child and how the gun was accidentally discharged.

The investigation remains active.
