Cavaliers Playing at Championship Level Early This Season

Cleveland Cavaliers We’re about to be off to as dominant a start as an NBA team could ask for.

The Wine and Gold started the 2024-25 season with their fifth straight win. resounding 134-110 victory on Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday night,

Even though it’s still very early in the season, Cleveland is playing at championship caliber right now.

According to X’s Luke Potosky, the 2024-25 Cavaliers become the eighth team in NBA history to start the season 5-0 with a +91 margin or better.

Six of the previous seven teams to achieve this feat have made it to the NBA Finals. And four of those six will advance to the 1964-65 and 2023-24 Finals Boston Celtics1966-67 Philadelphia 76ersand 2008-09 Los Angeles Lakerswon the title.

Cleveland’s first success comes under new head coach’s leadership Kenny Atkinson. The 57-year-old, who was hired this offseason, made team history just five games into his tenure with the Wine and Gold.

According to Cavs Notes on X, Atkinson became the first Cavaliers coach to go 5-0 in his first five games with the team. He also became the first NBA head coach to win each of his first five games with a team. Nate McMillan did this with Atlanta Falcons In the 2020-21 season.

The Wine and Gold have had success at both ends of the floor so far this season.

Offensively, Cleveland’s 125.6 points per game average ranks second in the NBA, and the team has four players averaging at least 17 points per game. Donovan Mitchell (23.8), Evan Mobley (19.2), Darius Wreath (17.8) and Jarrett Allen (17.8). The Cavaliers also lead the league in field goal percentage (53.9%) and three-point percentage (41.1%), while they rank fifth with 28.4 assists per game.

Defensively, the team ranks third in the NBA in steals (12.0) and defensive points (105.7) per game, fourth in opponent points (107.4) and turnovers (18.6), and fourth in opponent rebounds per game (107.4) and turnovers (18.6). 41.2) ranks fifth.
