Good garage sale! Local churches plan events to support food pantries

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – An upcoming garage sale will help support a Topeka food pantry.

I care about food pantries. It is a partnership of four area churches: Berryton United Methodist, Highland Park United Methodist, Shawnee Heights United Methodist and Southern Hills Mennonite Church.

Board president Linda Miller and manager Lavina Wall visited Eye on NE Kansas to share information about the food pantry and this weekend’s garage sale fundraiser.

Linda and Lavina said the garage sale included hundreds of items, from household items to collectibles, clothing and furniture. They also have a variety of Christmas items. Everything offered in the sale was donated by community members.

This garage sale and another held in the spring are top fundraisers for the food pantry. He sees a steady stream of people coming for help. Their approach is “customer choice”, tailoring what is given to one’s individual preferences. They say keeping up has required more purchases lately, making the garage sale even more important.

Garage sales in support of I Care Food Pantry are held Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 8:30 a.m. at Southern Hills Mennonite Church, 511 SE 37th St.

The food pantry is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on the lower level of Highland Park UMC, 2914 SE Michigan.
