Texas Longhorns’ Steve Sarkisian Talks Darrell K. Royal Stadium’s 100th Birthday

Texas Longhorns football schedule Today he will mark a very special birthday, with generations of Longhorn greats and thousands of lifelong fans walking his halls.

Darrell K. Royal Stadium is officially 100 years old this year, and although many aspects of its construction have changed since it was first unveiled in 1924, the legacy of those on the sidelines remains.

head coach Steve Sargsyan He made it a game-day priority to take a tour of the field every Saturday, examining everything inside its concrete walls. He said it reminded him of how he progressed to some of the best college football coaches in football history, especially those who had a stadium named in his honor.

“When you have a program like ours, at the University of Texas, you think about great teams, great players, great coaches competing in the middle of the court, walking the perimeter,” Sarkisian said during Thursday’s media release. . “This is something I do every Saturday when I go to games. I don’t know if y’all know this, but I go for a walk and it’s just to keep me grounded. And there are moments when I remember thinking about Darrell K. Royal standing on the sideline or Mack Brown.” I love.”

Darrell K. Royal served as Texas’ head coach from 1956-1976, and the Longhorns never had a losing season. He coached them to three national championships, 16 bowl appearances and two undefeated seasons. The university honored him in 1996 by renaming Texas Memorial Stadium to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Mack Brown He was the next coach to have an undefeated season and a national championship with Texas, but that wouldn’t come until 2005. Brown led the Longhorns to a 128-27 record from 1998-2009, including two Big 12 conference titles.

The structure not only housed the products of these iconic buses, but also two Heisman Trophy winners in the run are Earl Campbell in 1977 and Ricky Williams in 1998.

While Texas hasn’t seen a Heisman winner since, players representing the Longhorns have been known to put on a show for their fans every year, regardless of accolades or rankings.

Sarkisian said one of his goals for the team at every home game is to create an environment worth being in, like every generation has before them.

“I couldn’t see Earl Campbell running. I couldn’t see Ricky Williams running. So what was it like and how electric was the stadium at some moments?” Sarkisyan said: “We are trying to create a great atmosphere for our fans. We are trying to play football in a way that they will be proud of the way we play the game. We will not win them all every week, but we are trying.” “To play in a way that our fans and those who were there will be proud of the way we played and that we represented Longhorn country the right way.”

While Sarkisian still has a long way to go to reach Mack Brown status, let alone Darrell K. Royal, his improvements over the past three seasons have not gone unnoticed. Sarkisian, who took the program from a 5-7 record in 2021 to a 12-2 finish last season, is on the right track to being the best coach Darrell K. Royal has ever seen.
