Middleboro woman with history of animal cruelty accused of neglecting 26 animals

A Middleboro woman previously convicted of animal cruelty has been charged with the same thing again after authorities said they found more than two dozen horses, dogs, cats and guinea pigs “left in deplorable condition” on her property.

Kimberly Savino, 43, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Wareham District Court to 26 counts of animal cruelty by a guardian; This crime was increased because it was a later crime. Chief Judge Edward H. Sharkansky allowed Savino to go home without bail but ordered him to have no contact with animals.

The Plymouth District Attorney’s Office had requested $5,000 cash bail, arguing that Savino posed a risk because he had previously been charged with similar crimes in Michigan in 2014 and was ordered to pay a $40,000 fine. Savino is expected to appear in court again on December 10 for a preliminary hearing.

The lawsuit began when the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell conducted a “routine check” on Savino’s horses and found that they were “significantly underweight” and fed “very low-quality hay.” The MSPCA then involved the Middleboro Police Department, according to the DA’s office.

Over the next several months, Savino failed to comply with the MSPCA’s instructions on how to care for the horses and canceled or rescheduled at least nine appointments to check on the animals, prosecutors said.

Authorities later searched the property on October 18 and found not only the mistreated horses, but 17 dogs, cats and a guinea pig inside the home “left in deplorable conditions in the basement.” Officers also found the remains of “several” dead dogs in both the freezer and Savino’s garage. Authorities confiscated live animals.
