Niners RB Christian McCaffrey is expected to make his season debut on Sunday against the Buccaneers

Christian McCaffrey, who missed the first eight games with Achilles tendinitis, is expected to return Sunday when the 49ers visit the Buccaneers.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement Thursday while doing his weekly radio segment on KNBR radio.

“The last two days have been amazing. Hopefully this continues to go well and I expect to get him out there,” Shanahan said. “You never know if something’s going to happen, but these two days have been great and I expect to see him out there.”

McCaffrey was named the Offensive Player of the Year last season when he led the NFL in touches (339), rushing yards (1,459) and yards from scrimmage (2,023) and tied for the league lead in touchdowns with the Dolphins’ Raheem Mostert. with 21.

He missed nearly all of training camp before returning to practice just before the season opener. He suffered the injury in the final minute before a Sept. 9 game against the Jets and then suffered a setback at practice Sept. 12.

McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve two days later and spent the last seven weeks resting and rehabilitating, including a trip to Germany for treatment.

The 49ers (4-4) sit a half-game behind the Cardinals in the NFC West.
