One person was seriously injured when a bus overturned on a highway in northern New York

One person was seriously injured when a bus with more than two dozen passengers on board overturned on a highway in upstate New York, police said.

CHILI, N.Y. — A bus with more than two dozen passengers on board overturned on a highway in upstate New York Thursday morning, leaving one person seriously injured and others taken to hospitals, police said.

All 28 people on the bus were taken to hospitals, some with minor injuries, after the bus overturned around 7 a.m. on Interstate 490 west of Rochester, according to authorities. According to officials, everyone except a few people had exited the bus when emergency responders arrived.

Monroe County Sheriff Toss Baxter told the media at the scene: “Deputies arriving on scene found people trapped in the tour bus that had rolled over on 490.” “The passengers on the bus,” he said.

Authorities said the bus left New York City around midnight and stopped in Rochester on its way to Niagara Falls.

The cause of the rollover was not immediately clear. The driver was cooperating with police investigators and there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved. Police said no other vehicle was involved in the incident.

Westbound lanes of the highway remained closed while the investigation continued.

“This is going to be a long investigation,” Chief Deputy Michael Fowler said.

Tribal Sun, the company identified by Massachusetts police as the operator of the bus, did not immediately comment.

“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all involved in this serious incident, and I am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a prepared statement.
