Manitoba news: End of legislative session includes bench worker ban and machete rules

WINNIPEG-

Manitoba politicians are expected to enact several bills before the likely end of the legislative session this evening.

The NDP government, which has a large majority of seats, is implementing the comprehensive budget bill.

It enacts tax changes outlined in the spring budget but also includes unrelated items such as a ban on bringing in new workers during labor disputes.

The bill would also make it easier for workers to unionize and increase deductions for political campaign expenses.

Another bill, expected to be passed this evening, envisages new restrictions on the sale of machetes in order to prevent crime.

Among the bills not expected to pass this session is a bill that would make it harder for landlords to raise rents above the rate of inflation.
