Column: America’s last presidential frontrunner ends his streak

The pioneer no longer feels real.

For nearly a quarter-century, voters in Washington’s Clallam County — a lush spot in the far corner of the country — have favored the winner in 11 consecutive presidential elections. This an unmatched level of precision among more than 3,000 counties nationwide.

But the streak, which dates back to 1980, ended Tuesday when voters favored Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Trump by a decisive margin of 53 percent to 44 percent. Although there are still votes to be counted, it is certain that Harris will maintain her lead.

This means that there are no leading counties left in America; There were about 20 people heading into the 2020 election. After this, Clallam County stood alone, roughly balanced politically between three small population centers and sparsely populated rural areas.

(Yours truly visited the district and We measured voter emotions In September, in the immediate aftermath of the Trump-Harris debate: Back then, no candidate was running away from the contest, and almost everyone was firmly committed to their positions.)

Marc Abshire, executive director of the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce and a Harris supporter, said he was proud the county chose the Democratic nominee but was also disappointed we lost our bellwether status because of it.

“There were no grievance votes here like there were in most of the rest of the country,” Abshire said.

Putting wounded pride aside, he said there are many reasons to visit the region beyond old political insights.

“We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the country, if not the world,” Abshire said. “We have the sea and miles of mountains in front of us and in our backyard. “Our weather is always mild.”

People will need to start looking elsewhere for the political barometer.
