Traffic nightmare after second crash on I-64

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va.. (WSAZ) – A second crash Thursday morning caused even more backups on I-64.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64 were closed for hours near mile marker 18.

One westbound lane was reopened as of 12 a.m. Thursday, according to the Barboursville Police Department.

Some drivers were stranded on I-64 for two to three hours.

Early Thursday, a tractor-trailer driver lost control and crashed, causing a massive fire and explosion.

Traffic cameras captured the moment a tractor trailer crashed and caused an explosion west of I-64 on Nov. 7.

The accident occurred in the westbound lane.

Crews reopened the eastbound lanes around 7 a.m. Thursday but had to close eastbound traffic due to a second crash in the eastbound lanes around 9 a.m.

Barboursville Police confirmed the crash in the eastbound lane involved a semi-truck carrying frozen food.

Traffic is being stopped by emergency dispatchers at the 29th Street exit in the eastbound lanes and the Barboursville exit in the westbound lanes.

Emergency officials are asking all drivers to avoid the area if possible.

Police say traffic along Route 60 is always very congested.

WVDOH released the following statement Thursday: “DOH is working with contractors and law enforcement to reopen the highway at the location of these crashes on Interstate 64. Once the fires are out, crews will be on site to assess damage to the roadway, wall and impact attenuator. We are currently working with lanes when “A timeline for reopening has not been determined. Delays are expected for Eastbound and Westbound passengers on I-64 due to the accident.”
