Police confirm identities of victims in fatal plane crash near Mesa airport

MESA, Arizona (AZAfamily) — Authorities have identified four of the five people who died after a plane crashed and hit a car just outside the Mesa airport Tuesday afternoon.

While there were 5 people on the plane, 4 of them died at the scene. These were defined as follows:

  • Spencer Lindahl, 43 years old
  • Rustin Randall, 48 years old
  • Drew Kimball, 44 years old
  • Graham Kimball, 12 years old

The accident occurred around 16.45. Greenfield and McKellips roadsjust southwest Falcon Field Airport. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), preliminary information indicates that a Honda HA-420 jet attempted to abort takeoff before crashing into the airport perimeter fence and colliding with a vehicle on Greenfield Road.

“There appears to be a large fire at the other end of the runway,” can be heard from Falcon Field’s south tower. liveATC.net.

Sources confirmed to Arizona Family that Randall was the pilot, and the group reportedly flew to Provo, Utah. Mesa police said one person on board survived and was taken to the hospital with burns.

The driver of the vehicle also lost his life in the terrible accident, but his identity could not be determined because his relatives were notified.

Keith Small works in the company’s hangar and helps repair helicopters after wrecks. He was at work Tuesday afternoon when the accident occurred.

“I heard metal creaking and didn’t think about it at first. “Then I thought, ‘wait a minute,'” he recalled. “So I stood up and turned around and I could see the dirt at the end of the track. And as soon as you turn the corner, then boom! The plane blew up. And it blew up a few times, three times.”

As of Wednesday night, Greenfield Road will remain closed from McKellips to McDowell. The wreckage is still on the road and only traffic heading to the Air Force Museum is allowed through.

A Mesa police officer on the scene said the area is expected to be closed for several more days. Drivers in the area are asked to be careful while the investigation continues.

NTSB investigators are also at the scene and more arrived Wednesday. Once the on-site inspection is complete, the jet will be taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.

The preliminary report will be published within 30 days, while the final report is not expected for another 12-24 months.
