America Is ‘Not Immune’ to the Headwinds That Will Face Democratic Incumbents Around the World

Barack Obama issued a statement regarding Kamala Harris’ loss to Donald Trump in Tuesday’s election, suggesting that a set of economic conditions were responsible for her defeat.

“As I said on the campaign trail, America has been through a lot in the last few years, from a historic pandemic and pandemic-induced price increases to rapid change and the feeling that many people have that no matter how hard it is, they’re working, the best they can do is tread water,” he said. “These conditions have created headwinds for democratic powers around the world, and last night showed that America is not immune,” Obama said.

“The good news is that these problems can be solved, but only if we listen to each other and only if we abide by the basic constitutional principles and democratic norms that make this country great.”

Obama was on the campaign trail for Harris’ campaign throughout October, and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, also headlined several events.

Obama also congratulated Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) on their victory.
