Grandma’s marathon in Duluth sold out in record time

While Grandma’s Marathon runners strive for a personal best (also known as a PR), the race itself achieved a PR by selling out Wednesday, the fastest time in its 49-year history.

The 26.2-mile race reached registration capacity about two months before the last record-breaking sellout of the 2016 event. This was the race’s 40th anniversary and the race filled on December 31, 2015.

Registration opened Oct. 1, and race organizers say registrations for the half marathon and 5K races sold out within a few days.

“This is humbling and speaks volumes about the work, care and passion our entire community puts into our race weekend,” marketing director Zach Schneider said in a statement.

The capacity for the Duluth marathon is approximately 9,000 runners, but an additional 500 runners will participate in race challenges and run multiple races throughout the weekend, while others will participate through fundraising and other options.

Even though the races are sold out, there are still ways to participate. Runners can register and raise money through a charity partner, enroll in an official training group, or transfer registrations if a registered runner is injured or unable to participate.

Grandma’s Marathon weekend is scheduled for June 19-21, 2025. Organizers expect more than 22,000 people in total to attend.
