Roblox bans kids from ‘social gathering’ areas

Roblox will block children’s access to certain types of experiences following reports alleging the platform enables child exploitation.

Roblox says a new measure will prevent children under 13 from accessing experiences with “certain types of interactive features” in a post on the developer forum. These include “social meetups” where the main goal is to communicate with others via text or voice chat, and “free-form 2D user creation” experiences where players can draw on a chalkboard or whiteboard. This change will come into force as of November 18.

Another change prevents children under 13 from playing, searching or exploring unrated experiences. This change will come into effect after December 3. If a creator wants to allow a player under the age of 13 to access their game, they must complete a survey and ensure that all information about their experience meets Roblox’s current All Ages or 9+ rating requirements. Roblox said it will begin enforcing these requirements “next year.”
