‘Let’s Treat It Like a Hospital’ helps children feel comfortable in the hospital environment

HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) – Once a year, the Wallace State Community College School of Nursing transforms into Let’s Pretend Hospital. The program aims to eliminate the fear that children may experience when they need to go to the doctor or the emergency room.

“They see this giant hospital. White or cream walls. These people are in uniform. “Most of the time they’ve never seen people in uniform except in that scary environment,” said Let’s Pretend Hospital President Heather Ashley.

Kids go to different classrooms to learn about safety, germs, surgeries, emergency room visits, x-rays and more. Each room has different themes like Minecraft or the Frozen movie.

“When they walk in there, they need to know that what they see here may not be the Grinch and the princesses, but it is a safe place where they will be taken care of,” Ashley said.

The program also helps nursing students learn to work with and with children.

“Maybe if they go to Children’s Hospital, they can take better care of those patients. They are learning to work together. “From first-semester students to seniors, they learn to work together this way.”

Some of the supplies were donated by UAB, Huntsville Hospital and Cullman Regional.
