Tampa police say gunman killed himself during SWAT calls

A man suspected of shooting another person last week killed himself Tuesday after hours of SWAT negotiations, according to Tampa police.

Michael Shaheen, 28, is linked to a shooting that occurred around 3:45 a.m. Friday in the 1700 block of East Hillsborough Boulevard, the police department said in a news release. The man who was shot, who police said was in his early 60s, was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to the chest and survived.

Police identified Shaheen as the suspect and obtained a search warrant to search his 2007 Honda Accord.

On Tuesday night, officers were monitoring the Honda at Shaheen’s home in the 900 block of East 20th Street when Shaheen got into the car and drove away, the news release said. Shaheen “circled around the block” before returning home, the news release said.

When he pulled into the driveway, officers tried to stop him to search the car.

“Shaheen refused to exit the vehicle after multiple commands,” the news release stated. The police department’s SWAT team was called to take Shaheen into custody “through negotiations and the use of non-lethal techniques.”

Shaheen barricaded himself inside the car and stopped communicating with officers after more than three hours of attempted negotiation, police said.

When SWAT team members approached the vehicle, they found Shaheen with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

No other information was immediately released.
