Police are also appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact us when it is safe to do so.

A police spokesman said: “The collision occurred when a northbound HGV crossed onto the southbound carriageway and collided with a number of other vehicles.

“Sadly the collision resulted in one death and several serious injuries. Our thoughts are with everyone affected at this time.

“Emergency services are at the scene and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 while we continue to deal with the incident. The closure will likely remain in place for an extended period of time, so please check before traveling as guidance is available.
