Beginning with the 2024 general elections, live results of the race for the presidency and control of Congress have begun to arrive.

The first polls closed at 6 pm Eastern time on the East Coast, and voting continued for six hours until Hawaii and Alaska completed at 7 pm and 8 pm local time respectively.

President results by state

Vice President Kamala Harris received the Democratic nomination after incumbent President Joe Biden withdrew from the race. Republican candidate former president Donald Trump hopes to return to the White House after defeat in 2020.

President results: Electoral college

To win the US presidency, a candidate must win 270 of the total 538 delegate votes.

US Congress balance of power

Democrats have held a slight edge in the U.S. Senate for the past two years. However Republicans will now have at least 51 seatssufficient for an absolute majority.

Similarly, Republicans aim to remain in power in the US House of Representatives, but as every two years, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election.
