5 BL Dramas Featuring Iconic Allies We Love

It makes sense that the main couples tend to be the center of attention, but in the BL world, there are times when the allies really shine, too; special characters who support and stand up for love in all shapes and sizes. Characters you wish were real and your best friend.

This is all about applauding the most adorable and iconic allies in the BL world. These five characters are characters you can’t help but love.

Warning: Mild spoilers ahead!

1.“Give Me Light”: Shi Woon

The MVP award for “Light On Me” undoubtedly goes to Namgoong Shi Woon (Go to Woo Jin), the most lovable and stupid ally of the series. Shiwoon is the character of the antisocial and openly honest Woo Tae Kyung (Lee Sae On) tries to come out of his shell and join in to make friends. However, their attempts do not yield immediate results.

Tae Kyung soon faces two opposing men: student council Vice President Noh Shin Woo (Kang You Seok) and President Shin Da On (Cho Chan Yi). Cue Shi Woon, a self-proclaimed relationship expert who can capture the romantic atmosphere in the student council before anyone else.

The surprising thing about Shi Woon’s sunshine is that he has no problem admitting that his friends might have feelings for each other. He supports them from the very beginning, no questions asked!

Shi Woon is never late in offering advice to his friends who are trying to cope with their complicated, growing emotions. Even though he sometimes seems like he’s speaking in riddles (at least to the oblivious Tae Kyung), he’s always saying things his friends need to hear. Shi Woon gives off Golden Retriever energy 24/7 and he truly is the king of reading the room.

All Ji Yeon wants from her friend is to find a good man who will treat her right, and that may come true when something starts happening between Seung Hyeon and her boss.

What starts as a small office romance turns into something even bigger after a drunken kiss, and Ji Yeon is there to help Seung Hyeon navigate the treacherous waters of office romance. As an outspoken woman who is herself part of the LGBTQ+ community, she is truly an admirable, open-minded character.

One of the most iconic scenes in the drama is when Seung Hyeon drinks a little too much and accidentally It turns out that Seung Hyeon likes men. Of course, he does this in front of his boss, and it actually helps his friend in the long run.

3. “My Love is Complicated!”: Hashimoto Mio

In the honest and kind Hashimoto Mio (Fukumoto Rico) “My Love Confusion!” She may seem like your average school girl until she steps on stage to encourage and protect her ditzy deskmate Aoki Sota (Michieda shunsuke). Hilarious chaos and identity crisis ensue when Sota borrows an eraser from Mio. This leads to confusion about who likes whom in his class. This confusion creates a friendship between Mio and Sota.

When Sota reveals to Mio that his crush is another male classmate, Mio immediately reassures him that this is normal and that there is nothing wrong with him. It didn’t even take a minute to process. This scene could easily move anyone to tears.

In the end, Mio plays a big role in helping Sota accept that his feelings are completely fine, and Sota isn’t afraid to punch anyone who tries to tell him otherwise. If it weren’t for him, he might not even have the courage to listen to his heart, let alone accept himself. Well done Mio!

4.“Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Desires to Be Recognized”: Yamada Koharu

Yamada Koharu (Yahagi honoka), proud fujoshi (an extreme BL fan) is the funny BL lover in the movie “Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Desires to Be Recognized”. He is close friends and classmates with the rather gloomy Nekoyashiki Mamoru (Matsuoka Koudai). Mamoru is an erotic BL manga artist who must feel his work is recognized in order to survive.

Without expecting anything in return (other than continuing to publish BL novels), Koharu just wants her friend to find happiness and success. In one of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking scenes of the series, he defends Mamoru against a classmate who tells him he’s gay. It’s very satisfying to see his slap. Perfect.

Mamoru is already struggling with depression and a serious inferiority complex, so when his childhood friend and former love, now a J-pop idol, comes back into his life, Mamoru’s complicated emotions go into overdrive. Luckily, Koharu is there to give him advice and a shoulder to cry on when times are tough.

She’s always there for him, whether it’s making a house call with dinner, giving him advice on his drawings, or helping him with his manga activities. He’s an icon through and through.

5. “My School President”: Thiu

Finally, in “My School President,” Mark Pakin plays Kunaanuwit, Tinn’s best friend and the ever-reliable Thiu (Gemini Norawit Titicaroenrak). Thiu is all too aware that Tinn has a long-time crush on another classmate, Gun (Fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul). In fact, he was Tinn’s wingman.

Since Gun hasn’t noticed Tinn yet, Tinn decides to finally make her dream of dating Gun come true by becoming the school president. Of course Thiu is there to help with Tinn’s plan – ahem, plan– Ways to win Gun’s heart. Thiu is also a BL observer and even suggests Tinn to use the BL series to learn how to win Gun’s heart. That’s pretty good advice in my book.
