One of two people shot in Elkhart dies

Nov. 4 — ELKHART — The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday morning.

One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting at 4:40 a.m. in the 700 block of CR 3 North in Elkhart, police said.

Police teams arrived at the scene and found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, Romulo Jesus Reyes Osuna, 33, of Elkhart, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Medical teams took the second person to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of his injuries. According to the latest information, the condition of the second victim, who was shot with a firearm, was stated to be critical.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit has been activated per protocol and is conducting the investigation. No arrests have been made at this time and this remains an active and ongoing investigation. NON-LETHAL SHOT

Elkhart police are also investigating a non-fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning at River Run Apartments.

Police were called to the area at 4:06 a.m. for reports of a shooting at the building at 324 Middlebury Street, which left the building with injured people.

Upon arrival, officers found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound and he was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Shortly thereafter, officers responded to 719 Monroe St. for a second shooting victim. was sent to the building. Police officers arrived at the scene and found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound inside the building. Additionally, those with non-life-threatening injuries were also taken to hospital.

As part of the investigation, the police detained a male person related to the incident. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

WAKARUSA ACCIDENT

A teenager was hospitalized in a traffic accident after police say he failed to yield the right of way in Wakarusa Monday morning.

Police say at 7:11 a.m., Jonathan Royal, 35, of Bristol, was driving a 2010 Nissan Rogue at the intersection of CR 32, Ind. He said he was traveling southbound on 19th at the same time the teen was driving eastbound on CR 32 in a 2012 Chevrolet Impala. .

Police say Royal crossed the intersection and the teens also passed, and the two vehicles collided.

The teenager was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of excruciating hip pain. The teenager was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

Arrests

—A 36-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 4:27 p.m. Saturday on charges of resisting law enforcement and driving on a suspended license after he was stopped for a traffic violation near U.S. 20 and U.S. 33. He fled the scene.

— A 62-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 9:41 p.m. Sunday on a drunken driving charge after someone called to report his vehicle had crashed into a silver Nissan.

— A man was arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 1:17 a.m. Sunday on charges of driving under the influence and failure to obtain a license after police observed his vehicle leave the roadway and go over the fog line near U.S. 20 and U.S. 33.

— A 38-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 6:20 p.m. Monday on charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of a controlled substance. A drunk driver in the 900 block of West Plymouth Avenue.

HIT-RUN

— A 47-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 9:12 p.m. Sunday that a vehicle crashed into a utility pole and the driver left the scene on foot.

—A 31-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 12:09 a.m. Monday that his car was struck by another vehicle in Roxbury Park overnight.

SEX CRIME

—Goshen police were notified of a rape that occurred within Goshen city limits on Monday at 6:18 p.m.

—Elkhart County deputies responded to a report of someone being sexually assaulted by someone they knew at Broadmore Estates in Goshen between Oct. 8 and Oct. 12.

—Elkhart County deputies responded to a report of someone being sexually assaulted between 3-4:30 a.m. at the North Lake Apartments in Elkhart.

THEFT

An 84-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 2:46 p.m. Monday that someone took jewelry from the 1700 block of Juniper Place.

CRIMINAL DAMAGES

— A 53-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 5:47 a.m. Sunday that a person she knew damaged her bedroom window in the 1300 block of Sedgefield Way.

— A 35-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 10:15 p.m. Saturday that someone had thrown a vehicle onto U.S. 6.

— A 42-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that around 1 a.m. Sunday, someone placed an explosive in a mailbox in the 51000 block of Shady Lane and it went off.

—Mehl & Mehl, 222 N. Main St., reported to Goshen police at 3:06 p.m. Monday that a person known to the business had committed criminal mischief.

THEFT

—A 30-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 12:21 a.m. Monday; someone reported stealing a trash can from the 1300 block of South 16th Street.

—An 80-year-old woman reported to Goshen police that someone took medication from her room in Greencroft on Sunday.

— A 48-year-old man reported Goshen police that his vehicle was stolen from the 3300 block of Corrie Drive at 6:46 p.m. Monday.

—A 44-year-old man reported to Goshen police that his laptop was stolen in the 61000 block of CR 17 at 4:11 p.m. Sunday.

— A 62-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday that someone broke into his property in the 23000 block of CR 18 and stole parts from his lawn mower.

— A 38-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies that someone stole his temporary license plate from his vehicle in the 1000 block of Toledo Road on Wednesday between 2 and 4 p.m.

—An employee of Jimbo and Company Transport, 12121 CR 12, Middlebury, reported to Elkhart County deputies at 9:33 a.m. Friday that someone had stolen a Grand Design travel trailer after failing to return it to a designated dealer.

—J&T Auto Service, 1500 W. Bristol St., Elkhart, notified Elkhart County deputies that someone stole two vehicles between 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 12:15 a.m. Friday.

— A 37-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 8 p.m. Friday evening and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, someone stole several thousand dollars’ worth of construction tools and equipment from a construction site in the 71000 block of CR 29 in Syracuse.

LOST WALLET

A 53-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 4:11 a.m. Sunday that she lost her wallet at the Walmart at 4024 Elkhart Road.

FAKE

—A 72-year-old woman reported fraud to Elkhart County deputies on Oct. 31.

—A woman reported to Goshen police at 10:03 a.m. Monday that someone had received money from her online without permission.
