WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Illinois (WIFR) – The first female volunteer Fire Department Chief has been appointed at the West Suburban Fire Department.

On November 5 at 4 p.m., the West Suburban Fire Department appointed Kay Gober as Fire Chief. This marks the first female volunteer Fire Chief.

Chief Gober says: “Titles mean nothing to me; I just want to make sure my staff can work well with me. I think we have a good squad. “We used to have thirteen family members at a time and now we’re up to six, but we’re still going because we know the community still needs to be served.”

Gober has more than 22 years of firefighting experience. He says his biggest challenges as chief are finding funding for new equipment and offering more training to existing staff.
