US may consider withdrawing from Iraq after presidential elections – top Turkish diplomat – World

ISTANBUL, 6 November. /TASS/. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the United States may consider the possibility of withdrawing troops from Iraq and Syria after the 2024 presidential elections.

“After the elections, the USA may consider withdrawing its soldiers from Iraq and Syria. They (the Americans) do not want their army to be in the region within Iran’s sphere of influence. As long as US troops are stationed there, they are open to attacks,” he said.

According to Fidan, the USA is discussing withdrawing troops from the Baghdad-controlled region of Iraq in 2025 and from Iraqi Kurdistan in 2026.

The top Turkish diplomat also said the future of the US-led coalition fighting against the Islamic State terrorist group (which is illegal in Russia), formed in 2014, is also on the agenda. Fidan said, “The plan is to shift the coalition’s area of responsibility to Africa.” he said.
