Oilers host Indian celebrations against Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place

The Edmonton Oilers will honor and celebrate Indigenous culture when they face the Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

“This game offers our fans the opportunity to learn about the history, culture and traditions of Indigenous Peoples, while also honoring the significant Indigenous community and fan base here in Oil Country,” Tim Shipton of OEG Sports & Entertainment said in a news release. on Tuesday.

Many Indigenous elders from across northern Alberta will be honored at the game. Drummers and dancers will participate in the pre-game celebrations. Three other Indigenous leaders in sports will also be honored at the game.

On the ice, Oilers fans will be able to hear the Canadian national anthem in Cree and enjoy a performance by a Métis fiddler.

Enoch Cree Minor Hockey players will be able to realize their NHL dreams by participating in a skills competition during halftime.

“We value our longstanding relationship with the Indigenous community and are committed to deepening our understanding so that we can continue to honor and exemplify inclusivity in the National Hockey League and our community,” Shipton said.

The Oilers 50/50 raffle will support Spirit North, an organization that helps Indigenous youth access sports and recreation programs.
