Amazon starts drone delivery in West Valley

TOLLESON, AZ – People in some parts of the West Valley may have to search for their next Amazon delivery.

The e-commerce giant announced Tuesday that it will launch a drone delivery service in and around its Tolleson site.

The company says customers who live near the Tolleson facility and purchase a qualifying product that weighs five pounds or less can have the product delivered by drone in under an hour.

Amazon officials say Valley customers will have access to more than 50,000 everyday essentials, such as household products and office/tech supplies, that are available for drone delivery.

Drones have received FAA approval to begin customer deliveries.

They say the approval includes the ability to fly “beyond visual line of sight” thanks to the built-in detection and avoidance system the drones have.

“This type of delivery is the future, and it’s exciting that it’s starting in the Phoenix Metro Area,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said earlier this year. “Moving to zero-emission package delivery will help us reduce local pollution and make our city a home for the innovative technology of tomorrow.”
