Greenville County deputies fatally shoot Greer man after separation

The South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement is investigating a fatal shooting involving Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies.

An unidentified Greer man was shot and killed by SWAT team deputies late Monday after a three-hour standoff, according to Lt. Ryan Flood with GCSO.

Flood said Greenville County communications received a report of a shooting at 3212 North Highway 101 around 9:30 p.m. The caller said a man shot at another person living in the home. The victim, whose identity the police could not identify, escaped unharmed.

The GCSO SWAT team arrived and attempted to negotiate with the man inside the residence, according to Flood. Around 12:30 p.m., officers fatally shot the man. Flood did not say what led to the shooting.

“The suspect barricaded himself in the house and the SWAT team arrived on scene and set up a perimeter. We attempted to negotiate with the suspect several times and when those attempts were unsuccessful, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Sheriff Hobart Lewis said via video.

The two deputies involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave. None were injured.

Flood said GCSO will not immediately release additional information about the incident, but will release a community information video about the critical incident at 8 a.m. Dec. 20 via the GCSO YouTube page.

The attack was the fifth involving GCSO deputies this year. Last year there were three.
