Most cancer survivors can now donate blood in Canada

In Canada, changes have been made to the eligibility criteria for blood donors, especially when it comes to cancer survivors.

A lifetime deferral is still available for those recovering from leukemia or lymphoma, according to Brett Lawrence of Canadian Blood Services.

However, for most other types of cancer, people can donate if they are cancer survivors and within a year of treatment.

“(This change) took effect in the last year or two,” Lawrence said.

“This comes from Canadian Blood Services researchers and a new study showing that post-cancer survivors can now donate blood.”

Melody Zeller, a cancer survivor who received blood transfusions, is pleased with the eligibility update.

“Everyone needs to get out there and find out if they can donate again and do it as quickly as possible,” he said.
