Bucknell tops Delaware Blue Hens in basketball opener

play

The Blue Hens started the match in a hurry.

They ended with a fiasco.

And as college basketball games generally go, what happened next was far more decisive than what happened at the beginning.

Bucknell scored the game’s final 12 points in the final 2:08 and had never led until then.

But the momentum had picked up even before that, as they defeated Delaware 85-73 at the Carpenter Center in the season opener, with a crowd of 1,775. The Blue Hens scored seven points in the final 7:55.

What did Delaware coach Martin Ingelsby say?

“Bucknell got into a great rhythm on the offensive end and I challenged our group at the end of the game that we needed to do a better and tougher job in situations where the ball wasn’t going in. I think you saw that in the second game, half of which was when they managed to put 48 points on the board. Our lack of size, our toughness and our ability to play without fouling.” It was really a problem.”

What went right for Delaware?

Delaware showed that some of its new players could make a big difference, especially Division II Jefferson graduate transfer Erik Timko (20 points) and Virginia Tech transfer John Camden (19 points).

Timko went 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from the foul line, while also grabbing four rebounds and blocking a shot on a valuable second-half defensive play.

6-8 Camden scored 19 points from close and long range.

As four different Delaware players made six 3-pointers in the first eight minutes, the Hens quickly built a 12-point lead, their largest lead of the game. We closed the first half ahead 46-37.

Niels Lane showed offensive versatility along with reliable defense, hitting an early three-pointer and finishing with 16 points and a team-high five rebounds.

What went wrong in Delaware?

Blue Hens showed that the work continues.

They made just two threes in 19 attempts in the final 32 minutes, which is a bad sign for a team that expects this to be a key tool. In the second half, they took the lead 48-27 with a score of 12 to 1.

Bucknell started and stayed hot, finishing 29-of-55 (52.7%) from the field and 10-of-19 (52.6%) from 3-point range.

Delaware also outrebounded, 40-32. Bucknell’s 7-footer Noah Williamson, whose presence attracted the attention of several NBA scouts, was hard to catch and finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Delaware also scored just two goals on fast breaks; This is something Hens hopes to become indispensable for.

Foul trouble hampered Delaware as Camden fouled out and post player Kevin Kogbara got into early foul trouble and played just 3½ minutes.

What Niels Lane said

“We’ve been together since June, but since it’s the first game of the season, it’s different when the lights come on. I think we need a little more time to get used to each other. I still think we’ll be fine.”
