Peter Dutton has warned colleagues against being dragged into a debate over abortion, amid evidence that the Queensland LNP’s handling of the issue cost him significant support in metropolitan seats in the final weeks of last month’s state election campaign.

Anthony Albanese told his caucus on Tuesday that Labor would defy history and increase its majority at the next election, while Mr Dutton said dealing with abortion would cost the Coalition key seats in Queensland and beyond.
