Penn escaped with a win in the season opener; La Salle, Temple women fall short

Penn guard Dylan Williams scored 19 points to lead New Jersey Institute of Technology to a 58-57 away win in men’s basketball on Monday. In the Quakers’ (1-0) season opener, Williams went 5-for-9 from the field and converted 4 of 3 attempts.

Ethan Roberts scored 15 points for the Quakers, and guard Sam Brown and forward Nick Spinoso added 7 points each. Tarik Francis and Sebastian Robinson scored 20 points each for NJIT, and Robinson added nine rebounds.

Penn will open its home opener at the Palestra against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday (7 p.m., ESPN+).

La Salle falls to Maine in season opener

La Salle women’s basketball fell short of its season opener with a 65-51 loss to Maine on Monday, where its starters largely made their debuts. Junior guard Ayisse Magassa led the Explorers (0-1) with 13 points. Freshman guard Joan Quinn added 12 points in her first regular season game after graduating from Cardinal O’Hara with All-Catholic League honors.

Guard Paula Gallego led Maine (1-0) with 21 points.

La Salle will unveil the newly renovated John Glaser Arena when it hosts Delaware in its home opener on Saturday (noon, ESPN+).

Temple leaves season opener to Richmond

Temple was unable to come back from a 14-point deficit in the first half and, despite a strong performance in the second half, lost to Richmond 79-72 at the Liacouras Center.

While Tiarra East broke the team record with 23 points, guard Tarriyonna Gary also scored 18 points, and the Owls shot 40.6% from the field but were outrebounded 39-26.
