Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nov 4 (PTI) Twenty-five candidates are left in the fray in the Bhokar assembly seat in Nanded after the last date for withdrawal of nominations for the November 20 Maharashtra assembly elections expired on Monday.

A poll official said 140 candidates had filed their nomination papers for the seat but 115 candidates have now withdrawn from the election.

This seat is a high-profile one as the BJP has given ticket to Srijaya Chavan, daughter of former Congress chief minister Ashok Chavan, who recently switched to the ruling party and is a Rajya Sabha MP.

He is pitted against Congress’s Tirupati Kadam.

“Two polling units will be deployed at each booth in Bhokar for the elections, the results of which will be declared on November 23. Three voting units will be deployed at each booth in Nanded North constituency where 33 candidates are contesting. There are 19 candidates in Nanded seat,” the official said.

In Beed assembly seat, former minister Jaydatta Kshirsagar withdrew his candidature leaving his nephew Yogesh Kshirsagar, contested on NCP ticket and fielded NCP (SP) MLA Sandip Kshirsagar in the race.

From Paranda seat in Dharashiv, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Ranjit Patil withdrew his candidacy. The seat will now witness a direct fight between NCP’s (SP)’s Rahul Mote and the state minister and Chief Minister. Eknath Shinde– Managed Shiv Sena’s Tanaji SawanT.

They said the deadline for withdrawal of nominations was Monday, November 4, and 141 candidates withdrew from the November 20 election race, leaving 196 contestants in the field.

The ruling Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP), are in direct competition on most of the seats. .

Those who withdrew their candidatures included Hemlata Patil of Congress, Ranjan Thakare of NCP, Ankush Pawar of MNS from Nashik Central, DL Karad of Nashik West and Dhanraj Mahale of Shiv Sena from Dindori.

However, despite her party’s directive, Shiv Sena’s Rajashree Ahirrao has not withdrawn her candidacy and will contest the Deolali polls. As a result, Mahayuti will have two candidates in Deolali: Ahirrao (Shiv Sena) and Saroj Ahire (NCP).

Shiv Sena and NCP are part of the ruling alliance along with BJP. Former MLA Yogesh Gholap is the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate from Deolali seat.

Former NCP member Samir Bhujbal, nephew of state cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal, also did not withdraw and will contest elections from Nandgaon assembly constituency.

He resigned from the NCP headed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and filed his papers as an independent candidate. Samir Bhujbal is fielding Mahayuti candidate to replace MLA Suhas Kande from Shiv Sena.

Voting for the 288-member Maharashtra assembly will be held on November 20 and votes will be counted three days later.
