A mother of two died in a drunk driving accident after the driver ran a red light: BPD

BRADENTON, Fla. — A mother of two died Saturday night after Bradenton Police say another driver ran a red light and crashed into her vehicle.

The family said 37-year-old Sara Holmes was off work at the time of the crash.

Her boyfriend, Sergio Larcher de Brito, was driving a Chevrolet Equinox and he was in the passenger seat.

“They literally ripped out the most loving person in our lives,” said her mother, Leesa Holmes.

Bradenton Police said:Cesar Navarrete, 25, was driving westbound on Cortez Road at an extremely high rate of speed. Police said Holmes was sitting in the vehicle when it struck the Equinox on the passenger side. Holmes died after being taken to hospital.

Police arrested Navarrete on charges of DUI and driving with a revoked license. Officers said an investigation revealed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.289.

“Get behind a 2,000-pound missile, a gun, move through traffic like that and ignore anyone around you,” Sara’s mother, Leesa, said.

The accident occurred at around 22.40 on Saturday. Police said Navarrete was speeding west on Cortez Road and approaching 43rd Street West in Bradenton.

Navarrete and his passenger were injured and remain hospitalized, police said.

Sara’s boyfriend said he didn’t remember much about that night, but he did remember feeling the impact.

“The point of impact was so bad. I told my friends and family that I didn’t feel like I was unconscious. I felt like I was awake, but I don’t remember anything after the impact,” he said.

The family said Sara was about a block away from her home when the crash happened.

Sara worked at Swordfish Grill and Tiki on Cortez Boulevard. The restaurant posted about her death on Facebook and shared a GoFundMe page to help her two daughters.

“How do you tell a 3- and 5-year-old that their mother is no longer here? It’s not an easy task,” Sara’s mother said.

“It’s hard to think about their daughter and what life they’ll have to live without her. She’s beautiful and they deserve her. They deserved to have her here,” said her friend Desiree McCullough.

Her friends described her as a selfless, kind and devoted mother.

“She brought security, comfort, love, affection. So everything that’s good in the dictionary you can associate with Sara,” her boyfriend Sergio said.
