Investigators learned that Maske and his wife lived on the same property, while a woman and her four children lived in a building next to the main house. The woman was identified by authorities as Aanerud’s girlfriend.

Shortly before the shooting, an eyewitness said the woman’s children came to Maske’s house and said Aanerud had robbed the house to the east.

The witness said that he and Maske decided to go there and see what was happening. Witness left him and went home to be with the children.

About 10 minutes later, the witness said Aanerud arrived at Maske’s house in a minibus and the woman, who lived in a building on the property, was in the front seat. Aanerud was carrying a rifle and forced his way into the house, demanding his “children”. Court documents state that the man fired several shots, then forced the woman and her children into the vehicle at gunpoint and sped away.

After Aanerud left, the witness said he went to the other property and found Maske on the ground covered in blood.

An Amber Alert was issued and the vehicle was located near Little Falls around 7:20 a.m. Aanerud was arrested and officers noted he smelled of gasoline, according to court documents.

The women and children were found in the minibus. The woman had injuries consistent with an attack. Police also found 13 stolen firearms in the back of the van.

Aanerud told investigators after his arrest that he accidentally shot Mask after he “poked his nose” where it didn’t belong and confronted Aanerud while he was carrying firearms from the house.

He later admitted that he started the fire and brought the woman home to pick up the children.
