1 woman died in an accident involving a school bus

MILWAUKEE – A 26-year-old woman was killed in a multiple-vehicle crash involving a school bus Monday morning.

The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. at South 27th Street and Howard Avenue. Greenfield Police are investigating.

A car was pinned under a school bus, and the remains of a gray SUV were surrounded by black fabric. A total of 5 vehicles crashed into each other.

The school bus driver and three others were taken to the hospital, all expected to be okay.

“I heard a loud bang, heavy commotion, and traffic suddenly coming to a halt,” driver Regina Ivy told TMJ4.

Ivy and other drivers say they rushed to help.

“It was pretty chaotic. Everyone stopped their vehicles to see if everyone was okay,” recalled another driver named Gary.

A school bus flipped onto its side following a crash at South 27th Street and Howard Avenue on Monday.

“When you hear the term ‘the bus tipped over’ or ‘the bus rolled over,’ said Roger Dean Brown, manager of the Lamers bus company, ‘it goes to a whole different level.’

Brown told TMJ4 that the bus drivers have been with the company for years, have a “spotless record” and have just finished their morning routes.

The bus was traveling south on 27th Street when another driver heading east on Howard Boulevard ran a red light and hit the bus, forcing it to crash into nearby cars, Brown said.

“When you look at what’s going on here, where there are serious injuries and fatalities and all-vehicle involvement, it’s clear that this could have been prevented. This is something that shouldn’t have happened,” Brown said.

Ivy says she led some people in prayer after offering to help.

“There was so much emotion in the air,” Ivy said.

First responders were called to a five-vehicle crash Monday morning at South 27th Street and Howard Avenue.

“It’s very sad. It’s sad for the people who died in this accident. It’s very sad for the person who passed away. I can’t imagine what his family is going through right now, I offer my condolences to them,” Gary said.

Greenfield Police officials would not confirm that the driver who ran a red light caused the crash, only saying that the investigation is ongoing.

They are working with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
