Grafton company ordered to stop operations causing ‘corpse’ and ‘vomit’ odors

GRAFTON – A local company must shut down any operations that emit a foul odor into the air that complaints describe as smelling of “corpse” and “vomit.”

A preliminary injunction ordered Feedback Earth Inc. to stop processing food waste, allegedly the source of the odors, into animal feed.

The injunction stems from a source case from the state attorney general’s office, which demanded an immediate and permanent end to odor-producing operations. This latest development does not mean the company, located at 109 Creeper Hill Road, has admitted guilt.

The company’s CEO, Alison Greenlee, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The lawsuit stated that noxious odors were detected as far away as 7.5 miles from the facility and that residents were unable to enjoy the outdoors and had to close their windows. Nausea and migraine headaches were also reported, according to the lawsuit. Repeated violations of the state’s Clean Air and Solid Waste Acts are alleged.

The injunction states that Feedback Earth cannot receive any solid waste or other unauthorized materials for recycling or recycling. It includes lobster shells, which prompted nearly 300 complaints comparing the smells to “garbage,” “corpse” and “vomit.”

The company also needs to stop discouraging citizens from making complaints by changing the hotline number and publicizing other reporting methods. Company officials should also stop visiting the homes of people who complain to the tip line unless they have written permission from the callers.

The lawsuit seeks penalties of $25,000 per day for each violation of the Clean Air Act and $25,000 per day for each violation of the Solid Waste Act, as well as an immediate and permanent cessation of odor-producing activities.
