“It wasn’t looking very promising during this time, so my friends planned a memorial service for me at The Shrine in Los Angeles, and I basically attended my own funeral (sic),” Jones admitted. “Man, everyone was there… Sydney Poitier, Sarah VaughanYou name it. “It was very special to see so many people there to celebrate 41 years of my life, but now being in London preparing for my 85th birthday celebration concert at The O2 tomorrow is absolutely incredible.”

Following the surgery, Jones recalled being told he would “never” play the trumpet again “because of the metal implants.” He persevered, however, stating that he would not let his health problems “keep him from pursuing other passions.”

Jones noted: “If I had sat down and felt sorry for myself, I would never have made ‘Thriller,’ ‘We are the World,’ ‘The Color Purple,’ or any of the movies that happened after ’74.” Before adding that his chances of survival at the time were only 1 in 100.

The “Heaven’s Daughter” artist concluded her Facebook post with the following words: “I can truly say that I attended my own funeral at 41 and my own birthday celebration at 85, and I would choose the latter over the former no matter what (sic)!!”
