Jury selection begins for 2021 mass shooting, mother speaks out

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Jury selection for three teenagers accused of participating in the 2021 mass shooting at the American Legion Hall in Gainesville will begin Monday morning.

Christian Jones, Javari Baptiste and Jarquez Mitchell are being tried together for their roles in the June 24, 2021 shooting.

Jones is accused of shooting 13-year-old Christ Scott, while Bapiste and Mitchell face murder charges in connection with four other people who were shot.

Scotts’ mother spoke about how the case affected her family.

“All kinds of emotions come up, not the good ones, but they come up and you try to suppress them by praying. I just keep the faith,” said Stephanie Scott.

A fourth person was arrested Monday for contempt of court. The getaway driver in the attack is believed to be 18-year-old Jakarean Ford, according to investigators.

“I hope to see and hear the truth and that justice will be served…they get what the law will give them,” Scott said.
