MoDOT adds travel safe zones to US 63 near West Plains

WEST PLAINS, Mo. (KY3) — MoDOT is adding two new travel-safe zones in Missouri.

MoDOT has previously used these in St. He settled in the St. Louis area. But officials decided to add new zones in Howell and Oregon Counties along US 63.

Safe zones for this five-mile journey are located in areas that see a high number of fatal accidents. Next year, drivers traveling on US 63 between West Plains and the Arkansas state line will pass through these travel-safe zones.

In addition to warning drivers about the area, we also expect an increased law enforcement presence. Sergeant Eddie Young of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said if drivers are pulled over and receive a ticket, they should expect that fine to double.

“In designated areas, double fines will be imposed for moving violations to create greater deterrence to further encourage people to pay attention to the active duty of driving on the roadway,” said Sgt. Eddie Young of the Missouri Highway Patrol. “And being prepared for events that could cause someone to have an accident.”

Safe zones for travel started on Monday.
