Delays recorded in Edo elections will not show in Ondo poll – INEC

National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Monday assured that the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State would be an improvement in the Edo State poll.

According to the INEC chairman, the errors recorded in the Edo polls will be directly addressed in the Ondo poll.

Yakubu, who is in Ondo State to access preparations for the upcoming election, disclosed that the electoral body is fully prepared.

The INEC chairman added that the electoral college will meet stakeholders ahead of the election and that the fake accreditation of voters will be implemented in six local councils in the state.

Yakubu, who also stated that the peace agreement will be signed by the political gladiators in the state, said, “We received positive reports from our government office in Akure, but we also decided to come for a preparatory assessment.

“So we’re here to basically look at what’s going on and the good work that the government agency is doing. We will meet with stakeholders, including political parties, non-governmental organisations, media and security agencies, and will also meet with our staff to assess our readiness. We will be here for a few days.

“We have learned many lessons not only from the last election, but also from previous elections. There are basically two challenges. The first of these is the election logistics that will ensure that the ballot boxes are opened immediately on election day.

“The second is outcome management and my assurance to the voters in Ondo State is that they will see rapid improvement in these two processes.”
