Haddon Township police officer fatally shot man with knife, AG’s Office says

A Haddon County police officer fatally shot a man armed with a knife early Sunday morning, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said.

According to a statement released by the AG’s Office, around 1 a.m. Sunday, the Haddon County Police Department received a call reporting an attempted burglary at an apartment building on West Crystal Lake Boulevard in the Westmont area.

Responding officers encountered a man “armed with a knife” in the stairwell, and an officer shot him “during the interaction,” according to the statement.

The statement stated that the police provided medical attention to the injured man while waiting for emergency medical personnel. The man was later transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

According to the AG’s statement, police found a knife at the scene.

Police have not released the name of the dead man or the officer who shot him.

The AG’s Office conducts investigations as required by New Jersey law in cases involving fatal shootings by law enforcement. The grand jury will consider the results of the investigation to decide whether any police officers involved in the shooting should be charged.
