Michael Caine Reveals What Advice Tom Cruise Asked From Him As A Young Actor: He Had ‘Something Special’

Caine said in 1983 that Cruise “was very polite, asking questions about how he wouldn’t just show up.”

Michael Caine He remembers his first encounter with Tom Cruise – while the latter was just a “very polite” young actor.

As an exception from his new book, Don’t Look Back, You’ll Fall: My Life Guideshared by Sunday Times On Sunday, Nov. 3, the 91-year-old two-time Academy Award winner reflects on a few of the highlights of his career, as well as his early memories of his longtime friend Cruise, now 62.

Caine, who writes that he has known Cruise for “over 40 years,” recalls meeting the actor at an event for Caine’s 1983 comedy-drama. Educating Rita. “I turned around and a very polite young actor was asking questions about how not to show up out of nowhere,” Caine writes. “That was Tom, probably around that time Risky BusinessesS.”

Caine, who was photographed with his wife Shakira Caine and Cruise at the film’s screening in September 1983, adds to the quote that there was “something special” about the then young star.
