New York Giants – Washington Commanders’ First Half Observations

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The Giants had a tough first half Sunday at MetLife Stadium that featured an explosive offense from the Washington Commanders.

For the second time this season, the Giants faced the Commanders hoping to pick up their first home win and avoid losing their fourth straight game. Having had little to no success passing the ball the past few games, the Giants have shifted into gear to the running game.

The Giants rushed for 142 yards in the first half and gained 6.8 yards per carry. Tyrone Tracy currently leads the rushing game with 50 yards on ten carries. Quarterback Daniel Jones spent most of the first half practicing as he struggled against the 10th-ranked defense in the league. Jones scrambled 50 yards multiple times to help the Giants get into good field position.

Jones is currently 4/6 passing and hasn’t made much progress against an aggressive secondary.

The first quarter was evenly balanced between both teams, but a costly turnover shifted the momentum towards the Commanders. After a successful challenge that resulted in a failed rescue, the Commanders went down to the board first. Jayden Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin for a one-yard touchdown. The Giants quickly responded by storming the field, giving the two players a first-set take as they crossed into the end zone.

Jones caught his first touchdown pass of the season after connecting with Chris Manhertz, who caught his first touchdown pass this season. The score remained tied for just a moment as the Commanders took a page from the Giants and used their hustle game with a quick reaction to the goal line. Austin Ekeler kicked a one-yard field goal to make the score 14-7.

Commanders took advantage of the weakness of Gaints’ defense to catch another touchdown pass to McLaurin. While the Giants have shown great dominance in the running game, they will need to find a consistent mix of scoring runs to get more production from their offense.
