Congregation returns to historic church damaged in May flood

GATESVILLE, Texas — “Yes, it was hard. “This was very hard to see,” said Jeff Huckeby, pastor of Pecan Grove Baptist Church.

In May, 25 news I told you how to flood Water poured through the doors of Pecan Baptist Church.

“I ruined everything,” said Huckeby.

With nothing left behind, the church had to be moved for more than four months.

But with the help of neighbors throughout Central Texas, Pecan Grove officially welcomes back its members and celebrates the “Return from the Flood.”

“We had help from the community and other churches and donors. We managed to fix it all, it took 5 months but we finally got here today,” Huckeby said.

The church was founded in 1882 and has survived many storms, but none like the one seen in May.

“But this one got so high it blocked both bridges from the highway. It was pretty bad,” Huckeby said.

When the doors reopened, some neighbors were recognized for their hard work and dedication to get the church back on its feet.

When the seats finally fill again and victory songs fill the air, the church says they will never forget the support of our community.

“We appreciate the community. The showing, the response, everything was a huge encouragement. It just shows we’re doing what we’re supposed to do here,” Huckeby said.

The church was able to raise more than $55,000 in flood relief donations from the community.
