AP Top 25: Oregon, unanimous No. 1 in CFP rankings, followed by Georgia, Ohio State

Oregon was voted unanimously No. 1 in the Associated Press college football poll on Sunday, solidifying the College Football Playoff selection committee’s goal of solidifying its top spot in the season’s first rankings.

The Ducks are ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the third straight week and are unanimous for the first time after a 21-point road win over Michigan.

Georgia, which received one No. 1 vote last week, remained No. 2 after overcoming three interceptions from Carson Beck and pulling away late to beat Florida.

Ohio State moved up one spot to No. 3 with a win over Penn State, the Buckeyes’ eighth in a row in the series. No. 4 Miami, which beat Duke, and idle No. 5 Texas each moved up one spot. Penn State, which was in the top five in the previous four polls, dropped to No. 6.

The CFP’s expansion to 12 teams this season means top teams losing to other top teams isn’t a definitive disqualifier in the national title race. The CFP’s first rankings of the season will be released on Tuesday and will be updated weekly until the rankings are released on December 8.

Tennessee retained its No. 7 spot despite struggling with three leads against Kentucky in the fourth quarter and prevailing 28-18.

Indiana jumped five spots to No. 8; It was his highest ranking since a No. 7 ranking in 2020 and his best in a non-pandemic season since the Hoosiers were ranked No. 4 in the 1967 Rose Bowl season. The Hoosiers beat Michigan State 47-10 on the road to reach 9-0 for the first time in program history; All wins this season have been by double digits.

SMU’s 48-25 win over Pittsburgh allowed the Mustangs to move from 20th to 13th; This week’s biggest rise. They haven’t been ranked this high since they were ranked No. 3 on Oct. 1, 1985, two years before the NCAA imposed the “death penalty” that shut down the program in 1987 for gross infractions. The school also chose not to field a team in 1988.
