Everton captain Megan Finnigan says the club ‘cannot be left behind’

Everton captain Megan Finnigan says the club “cannot be left behind” as the Women’s Super League continues to grow and become more competitive.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Everton’s 5-0 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday evening, Finnigan said: “The situation at the club is definitely not ideal at the moment and that affects the women’s team in some ways. “Once the new ownership is in place hopefully we can get that done. ” Start seeing changes for the better because this league is getting bigger and bigger.

“(The league) is growing so fast and that’s why the standards are so high. Everton Football Club cannot be left behind.”

Brian Sorensen’s side remain one of three teams yet to win a WSL match this season.

After conceding 5 goals to Chelsea at home, they fell to the bottom of the league with a difference of -11.

Everton are yet to score and an own goal from West Ham defender Camila Saez is the only one that has counted in their favor so far this term.

Finnigan added: “We need to clear up this mess. I don’t know the answer to that right now because it hasn’t been the easiest start to the season for us.”

“This needs to happen and it needs to happen soon. We need to dust ourselves off and prepare for another important game next week.”

The Blues’ next step is a trip to flight newcomers Crystal Palace, who sit ninth on four points.
