The four-year Aquaculture Development Plan aims to elevate the fisheries sector by turning aquaculture into a profitable and environmentally friendly activity for farmers.

It was initiated by the Coalition Government, which has fulfilled its commitment to provide a framework for policies that support a competitive and sustainable fishing sector.

Fisheries Minister Alitia Bainivalu said the plan was not only a roadmap for growth, but also a forward-looking plan to develop aquaculture in Fiji.

“The plan aims to reduce the seafood trade deficit, reduce regulatory burden, sustain research, development and expansion, improve market access, strengthen biosecurity, increase public perception, improve environmental performance, promote gender equality, seek investment and support education and training.”

Bainivalu adds that the plan prioritizes the development of nine aquaculture species that will improve livelihoods and ultimately drive growth of the economy.

Species include black-lipped clams, seaweed, black tiger shrimp, Pacific white shrimp, giant river shrimp, tilapia, giant clams, rock clams, and mabe pearls.

Bainivalu also says the plan bolsters our brand as a competitive advantage as it focuses on high-quality produce grown in a pristine environment with the employment of youth and women in rural communities.

The Minister of Fisheries thanked the individuals and organizations who contributed to the development of the plan, providing a beacon of hope for success in the rise of the fishing industry both locally and internationally.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was also instrumental in the development of the 2024-2028 Aquaculture Development Plan for Fiji.
