Weekday road closures as York city center bridge is removed

A major road in central York will be closed for several nights to allow removal of the remaining parts of a Victorian bridge that is being demolished.

According to the City of York, the new Queen Street diversion route near York Station will be closed for five consecutive nights between 19:30 GMT and 06:00 GMT from Monday 4 November.

This follows two weekend closures in April, when most of the Queen Street Bridge was removed and the diversion road was constructed.

Councilor Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport, said: “We understand how disruptive these closures are and will continue to work to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Remaining parts of the bridge It was left in place in April To help preserve the historic city walls.

The Queen Street Bridge was built in 1877 to cross railroad tracks that no longer existed.

A council spokesman said trains to and from York will operate as usual and buses will continue to operate throughout the closure.

However, they added that some bus routes will change due to road closures and this will include the temporary relocation of some bus stops.

The spokesman said York Station’s car park will also be open during the works, while residents and businesses on Queen Street will have access to its facilities at all times.

Ravilious said: “As with the closures earlier in the year, we encourage everyone to plan ahead, give themselves extra time if traveling in the area and check travel information online.

“We appreciate their efforts to help York navigate these studies and want to thank residents, visitors and businesses for their patience.”

Ravilious added that removing the remaining sections of the Queen Street Bridge was a “major milestone.”

Bridge removal is part of the project A £25m project to transform the area in front of York Station.
