Tucson community remembers lost loved ones

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Members of the Tucson community came together over the weekend, Friday, Nov. 1, to honor and remember their lost loved ones.

The 35th Annual All Souls Procession began its three-day celebration with the Dance of the Dead concert at the MSA Annex Building.

“When we come here, we remember all these people,” attendee Lupe Natividad said.

Over the years, the event has grown and evolved, but one fundamental premise remains: the celebration provides a safe space for family and friends to gather and remember their loved ones.

“I think it’s important, it’s part of the grieving process,” Natividad said. “And that really helps us, helps us move on with our lives and also be able to honor them.”

Natividad has been participating in the All Souls Procession for about 15 years, sometimes marching in the parade.

He came to see the altars set up around the venue, which he saw as a very important part of the celebration. He said he maintains a personal altar in his home for a few months each year to keep the memories of his loved ones alive.

The event is similarly vital for Mabel Ramirez-Trillo.

“We came because we wanted to honor the family members of the friends we lost last year, so for me, my family,” Ramirez-Trillo said. in question. “So it honors their spirit, you know how they raised us as a family, which is so important these days.”

While the celebration is not without its joys, Natividad believes that a space to confront its pain, whether old or brand new, is the most healing part of the experience.

“Sometimes we carry their photos and dress up. We feel the sadness too,” Natividad said. “This is a time to grieve and feel connected to all of your family members who have gone before you.”
